On January 26 the Sun Gazette reported that Arlington County, VA is considering passing a ban on outdoor drinking games.

In response, NoBoozeBan.org was formed to oppose any attempt to ban backyard drinking games.

Check back often for more updates and sign up for our email list (right) to receive alerts about how you can help stop the ban.

Reasons To Oppose The Ban

1. Existing Laws Already Deal With The Supposed Problem

The reason given for banning outdoor drinking games is that they create excessive noise, however existing noise ordinances already deal with this problem.

2. Police Have Better Things To Spend Their Time On

Arlington County is part of a major metropolitan area. The Arlington Police Department have more important issues that need their attention and police resources are already stretched thin. We’ve already been told by one police captain that the law would be “unenforceable” and would be a poor use of police resources.

3. The Law Violates Private Property Rights

Drinking alcohol (by those of legal age) on private property is legal. Playing games on private property is legal. Why should residents be banned from doing both on their property?

If this law passes, what is next? Here’s a list of other things that some people might say contribute to noise:

  • Backyard barbecues
  • Children playing
  • Swimming pools
  • Lawnmowers

Should these things be banned too?
